Words from The Rev. Dr. Tom Day

Rev Dr. Tom Day March 02, 2018
Dear Friends,

As we move through these reflective days of Lent, we often think about the things we should give up as an act a penance. Although this may be a common spiritual practice for some at this time of year, it is important we not forget why we deny ourselves of life's pleasures.
We don't make these sacrifices to punish ourselves for the sins we have committed, or as an admonishment for not living a more loving compassionate life. We are simply putting things aside during Lent to make more room in our hearts, minds, and souls for our Lord.

I was reminded by words I read in my daily devotion this week, that our primary job as Christians is to "love." We are to love with all our heart, with all our mind, with all our strength, and with all our soul. This is a pretty tall order for us human beings, but it is The Great Commandment left to us.

The problem is all the obstacles in life which distract us and lure us away from our life of loving. That problem might be a person who is always annoying and driving us crazy. It might be an addiction or habit which turns us inward, or a selfish desire which does not allow us to move past ourselves. Life is full of these obstacles which may separate us from a life of loving others and our Lord.

As my daily devotion challenged me, I challenge you: Use this Lenten season to reflect upon your life and observe where God is calling you to release something in your life. This will make it possible for you to be more loving. Sometimes we have to lose something in order to find it again in a new way.

Have a blessed Lent,
Fr. Tom
