Starting Over

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year! It is Resolution time. It's that season of the year when we " have" to start over, I mean we "get" to start over. Are you in any way like me - thinking yourself capable of starting over? Do you start new habits, behaviors, projects, and actually stick to them after January 8th??

I usually begin a new bible reading sequence, a new undertaking (maybe organizing all recipes, copying over all the stained ones), and I certainly begin the latest and greatest diet and exercise program.

My litany sounds something like this: I'll get to church earlier on Sunday and start attending Sunday School. I'll never skip a day with my walking, and I'll even increase the distance I walk. I'll add the Noon and Evening office to the morning prayer I usually do. I'll write more letters (thank you notes!), keep my drawers straight, eat dessert only on the weekends, serve more home cooked meals . . . sound familiar?

We can start over hourly, confessing our sin, believing His promises, and beginning again.

The thing is for a Christian, the new calendar year means nothing. We get a new beginning every morning in our daily acceptance of Him and His position in our hearts. Praise God we can start fresh each Sunday as we participate in the Eucharist, drinking in His presence, soaking in His love. We can start over hourly, confessing our sin, believing His promises, and beginning again.

Glad tidings, the pressure is off for keeping those New Year's resolutions. We know the grace of God, thank goodness. However, I do plan to watch TV less, pray more, and definitely no cookies in bed...

"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His mercy never comes to an end; they are new every morning; great is His faithfulness."
Lamentations 3: 22,23
